Meet Our Breeders: Josie

Josie. Our 2 year old ¾ Red Wattle and ¼ Hereford bought from Bob Mattie at Elysium Farms in Maryland. She is due with her second litter on April 12th, 2026 (first litter at our farm). She was bred with artificial insemination on our farm. We purchased purebred Red Wattle semen from International Boar Semen in Iowa. We have kept her on a 3.5lb feed diet for the duration of her pregnancy to keep her from having issues during farrowing (like a stuck piglet due to excessive growth). She was been in a pasture with 2 other sows until Monday April 6th when I will close her into her farrowing pasture by herself. In the week leading up to her farrowing she will be able to nest and create her birthing place just like us women do. I will provide her a bale of hay to make that space, but she will also grab twigs, sticks and grass to create her space as well.
